Interactive Television has different colour requirments to the Web. One of the main differences is that colours must not be too strong or they start to bleed into each other. This is known as "chroma crawl" and must be avoided. The maximum value you should use is 220(DC) instead of 255(FF). Sometimes even this is too much and you should back off even further and use 204(CC).

For example, usually one would use 255,255,255 (#FFFFFF) for plain white. On a TV set 204,204,204(#CCCCCC) is generally bright enough, producing a clean white which does not overpower the display.

The very darkest settings should also be avoided. Use 51 (#33) instead of 0 (#00).

Colours that render dull or washed-out in a browser will look surprisingly bright on a TV screen. Hence the black background here...
